tonight. keep up the great work. we end this broadcast tonight not knowing where mitt romney stands on health care. that's the hitch. i'm ed shultz. the rachel maddow starts right now. >>> this is the logo of the china offshore oil corporation. it's kind of cool right? i like to call this cnooc. as you can tell, the logo is kind of a pick to graph e ex-planing what they do. it's supposed to be an oil derrick and the c is the platform that it's sitting on. the whole thing is in blue water because they are an offshore oil company. this chinese company is a huge company. it's almost entirely owned by the chinese government. in 2005, they tried to take over an oil company based in california. so big chinese, state-run company trying to take over a california company. this is the chinese government, a big business deal like that actually does have national security implications for us as a country. that's the kind of international business deal that's subject to review by something called the committee on foreign investments in the united states. a big committee that reviews this stuff.

romney needs a great october. our first read team makes this point. take a listen, quote -- >> so, who has the advantage? let's look at our debate scorecard. there will be six segments focusing on domestic policy, our chuck todd reports that there are no time limits. a format that neither of the candidates have experienced. president obama's last debate was against senator john mccain in the fall of 2008. while governor romney has had nearly two dozen debates during that gop primary. the obama campaign says the president's strategy is focused on shorter, crisper answers. the romney strategy, as reported in "the new york times" has the governor memorizing a series of zingers to try to hit the president with. let's bring in our "news nation" political panel for this monday. democratic strategist chris, national radio host michael, and also an msnbc contributor, and villa skype as you can tell from our shot there, steve, conservative radio show host. you have the visual disadvantage because you're skype. i'll let you start off first here. let me play what paul ryan, completely opposi

. >> thanks for staying with us. the latest swing state polls. mitt romney supporters, you might want to look away for this part. president obama is up by 2 points. in swing state new hampshire, it's president obama up by 5 points, in swing state up pennsylvania, it president obama up a by 7 points. do we still call michigan a swing state? mitt romney supporters, you can drop your hands from in front of your eyes here. the latest poll has mitt romney up by 4 in michigan, which is a lot less than the 12 point and 14-point leads the president has also had in michigan in month. we also have national polls and mitt romney, it's time for the finger vision. the latest fox news national polls shows president obama up a by 5 points. that's the fox news poll. the gallup daily tracking poll had been close. now gallup shows president obama up a by 6. even the quite ostentatiously republican leaning rasmussen poll gives president obama a 1-point lead nationally. in the states that matter, the obama campaign is ahead. things could change. we've got the debate starting n next week, there's long way to go,

voted for it but for the democratic senate that would it passed and mitt romney said at the time were he president and this passed he would sign it into law. sign into law the requirement y'all come up with $6,400 a year more for the same benefits. and now they say to us, oh, no, no, no. joe, we don't have that plan anymore. well, guess what? they got a message to the american people. they said we got a new plan. new plan. that's going to work better and save medicare. that plan, though, a harvard study comes out and says, that new plan still a voucher, would cost somebody 55 years old right now by the time they get on it $60,000 a year more over the life of medicare. ladies and gentlemen, the reason i bother to tell you this is, the reason i bother to tell you this is, the fact of the matter is it goes to motive. it goes to motive. can you imagine? can those of you who know me? can you imagine me voting for a proposal adding $6,400 a year to the cost of medicare or 60,000 over the life of it? ladies and gentlemen, the neighborhood i come from -- i mean this sincerely -- the neig

the time. he brings it up all the time. it is his republican opponent, mr. romney, who has generally done his best to avoid the subject altogether. i have to say, credit where credit's due. today while he still did not go there directly, at least, at last, finally, today mitt romney got close to the subject. >> we have huge numbers of our men and women that are returning from conflict that are seeking counseling, psychological counseling, and can't find that counseling within our system. and, of course, record numbers of suicides. this is a crisis. >> that was mitt romney speaking today in springfield, virginia, to the american legion. and, no, he is still not apparently able to say anything about the war directly, but at least today where you saw him there, he did mention that this war has produced an outcome of war. which is american war veterans. neither the war nor its veterans were mentioned, of course, in mr. romney's speech to the nation upon becoming his party's nominee for president. he's trying to fix the veterans part of that oversight. he really as a candidate still seems inca

in washington. let me start with the many secrets of mitt romney. he wants to be president, he'll tell us that, but why? besides the office that is, besides the honor his father missed, besides the notion of being america's top winner that is. why does he want to be president? to go to war with iran? waging a new war in the middle east while escalating two others? to do it without telling us when or how he's going to end it or, for that matter, those two. to finance a big across the board tax cut but not tell us how. not what big across the board deductions he'll deny people in order to pay for it or even what taxes he's been paying himself over the years. or how he'll finance all those popular things in the president's health care plan once he kills the plan itself. lots of secrets. secrets because he himself has no earthly idea what the answers are. i'm joined by democratic strategist bob shrum and salon's joan walsh. first, however, we have two new national polls on the presidential race. let's check the "hardball" scoreboard. according to a new "washington post"/abc news poll, president ob
